Short presentation of the photographers:

Hannu Hautala, age 65, lives in Kuusamo, 200 km east from Oulu . Hautala has worket as a freelance wildlife photographer since 1970. He is the most famous Finnish wildlife photogarpher in Finland and abroad. He’s main themes are wild birds. He has been participating in several international exhibitions and won several prizes like the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year prize of honor in years 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. He has publised over 30 books. His most noteworthy books are A year in Kuusamo 1985, Moments of Movement 1995, Colourscape 1999 and his last book The Land of My Happiness 2005.

In the book The Land of My Happiness he describes his living and his work in Kuusamo nature as follows: “All in all, it was pure chance that a quarter of centyry ago Kuusamo was destined to be the place where I was to spend the rest of my life. Feeling just as satisfied, I continue to roam Kuusamo and the nearby region. This is the Land of My Happiness . Although my hobby has become my job, I never detest going out into the wilds with my rucksack full of cameras. In the late winter – when the refrozen snow shimmers in the sun and I squat on a tree stump sipping my tea as I watch nature waking up – it occurs to me that I ought to be paying entertainment tax on this!”

All of Hautalas images in the Exhibition Frozen Horizon are taken during his trips into the Kuusamo nature, the birds he has exposed are all wild and natural in the area of Kuusamo. Hautala aslo told me that his greatest role model in photogaphing nature is and has allways been the old traditon of Chinese landscape and nature drawing.

Hautala was not able to visit Haikou this time, he is busy photographing owls in Kuusamo.

Kalervo Ojutkangas, age 63, lives in Vihanti, a 100 km south from Oulu . Ojutkangas has been photographing since young boy. Photography had already settled as his hobby when he became interested in larger cameras around 1970. He had little by little got familiar with the issue through periodicals and literature.

A few who had used a large format camera proved with their pictures that it has been reasonable to have one. William Henry Jackson is one of the earliest in his most active years 1860-90, Edward Weston in the thirties and others.

Large camera gives a possibility to control the image in such a way that it is ideal for a lanscape which seldom flies away even though all the adjusting takes some time. It is, of course, a matter of luck if the light is good when everything is ready. It may have escaped - or it may come when ready and you keep the nerve to wait a little while.

Landscape photography has been his main activity as a photographer from about the mid 70s to the late 80s. After having had an exhibition of Landscape Work in Helsinki 1986 and two years later having his first book Earth Prints published he feld less pressures towards the quantity of pictures. At that time some other approaches within photography became interesting again.

Ojutkangas says that Photography is a way of seeing. A way of seeing leads to taking photographs. It is not important to tell which comes first. Just let´s look at pictures and let´s allow the imaginations go.

Ojutkangas participates the exhibition Frozen Horizon  with large images of landscapes from Oulu Province .

He has published several books, his most noteworthy books are The Land of the Ranes 1980, The death of the Capercallie 1987, A Dans in the Swamp 1994 ja The Land of The Capercallies  2001.

Luhtas main theme has during the decades been the forrest and the swamps in the wilderness around Pudasjärvi. He has been photographing landscapes, wild animals and native birds. After the millenium he started to spend more and more time in the Forrest at the night time. The northern lights and the clear and starry sky abowe the wild Forrest fascinated him and he started photographing this night sky. Now a day he is specialized in night photography.

Luhta says that only by watching the clear sky of stars one really can understand where we humans live, the stars can tell you a story which leads you two million years back in time.

In the exhibition Frozen Horizon he will show a series of 22 images of the northern ligts and the starry sky. His series is called The Magical Night.
