Circus Art
Contemporary circus is in a very dynamic stage in Finland. The rapid development of this artform demonstrates its vitality, as a result of which the demand for resources is growing. The National Council for Dance helps support the artistic and productive development of contemporary circus and continues to work towards increasing the funds available to circus art.
Unlike with many other artforms, the majority of circus artists do not live in Helsinki Region; circus art is exceptionally active throughout Finland. There are many performances, and audience numbers are growing. As a recreational activity, circus has become one of the most popular forms of the performing arts among children and young people. Over 30 circus schools are active in Finland, fostering a new generation of talented circus artists.
Currently nearly all performances are freelance productions. The National Council for Dance awards grants and subsidies to support performances. In addition to project grants, operational subsidies are allocated to support the activities of circus groups. This year 17 groups are being funded.
